• The Art Movements Directory, from The Art Industri Group, "is a concise reference guide to the major art movements and periods, helping you to learn more about the development and history of art."
  Arranged both A-Z by Movement name and also in chronological order. This Directory does not include images, or links to related sites, but is a useful introduction to the many Art Movements covered.

• The Tate Collection "Tate holds the national collection of British art from 1500 and of international modern art. All works can be found on this site, each with its own information page."
  This valuable resource may be accessed in various ways:
  1. Browse by Artist, A - Z, many of the results include Biographies and related links, as well as illustrated listings of works in the collection
  2. Search or Browse by Subject using either the subject categories listed, e.g. 'Group/Movement', which breaks down by period, then by movement. Or search, Simple Search by Artist Name & Work Title, or Advanced Search, using a variety of search keys.
  3. New Acquisitions
  which also explains the Tate Collecting Policy
  4. There is also a very useful and extensive Illustrated Glossary which includes descriptions of the different Movements or Schools of Art.

• The Web Gallery of Art is "a virtual museum and searchable database of European painting and sculpture of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods (1100-1850), currently containing over 15.400 reproductions. Commentaries on pictures, biographies of artists are available. Guided tours, free postcard and other services are provided for the visitors."

• Mark Harden's Artchive an extremely useful site, with lots of images and information.
  In the main Artchive images and information are arranged, A-Z, by Art Movement, 'Abstract Expressionism' to 'Symbolism', plus a few other categories such as 'Ancient Art', 'Women' and 'New Additions'. Each category gives a definition of the movement it covers and within categories resources are arranged, A-Z, by Artist and ususally include a brief biography, details of books about the artist and online images of the artist's work.
  The Galleries mimic a 'physical' art gallery and showcase the work of particular artists or movements or years etc.
  Theory and Criticism gives examples of the analysis and critique of various works by such writers as Kenneth Clark, Meyer Schapiro, Mark Rosenthal, Sister Wendy Beckett etc. Includes a description of Vermeer's 'The Art of Painting' by Kenneth Clark which acts as a good introduction to how to look at a painting and is an extract from his book 'Looking at pictures'
  Juxtapositions is "a section of verbal and visual commentary on art. This section provides a forum for me to inflict my amateur art criticism on the world."
  The Art CD-ROM Reviews, as its title suggests, gives reviews of commercially available CD-ROM art collections.
  The Links section covers:
  1. Museumsa very small selection of some famous galleries, either entirely virtual, e.g. 'The Webmuseum, Paris' or physical galleries with significant online resources, such as 'The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco'
  2. Artists - again a very select list, but the few links given appear to be very comprehensive sites.
  3. Resources a small selection of excellent art resource websites.
  The Welcome page gives a description of the site and its purpose.

• Art History Resources - Artists, Art Movements, Biographies, Artwork from World Wide Art Resources
  It is possible to browse by artist name, A - Z (22,000+ artists), by Century(1100 - 2000) or by Nationality (Algerian - Welsh)There is also an Alphabetic Listing of Artists with (brief)biographies (1000+)and a browsable listing of Art Movements - Abstract Art to Vorticism, with the dates associated with each Movement.
  Artists by category e.g. Animation, Computer, Illustration, Photography, Textile etc. As can be seen from these example categories most of these are contemporary artists, but there is a category: Masters, this links to the Art History Resources detailed above. There is also an A - Z Listing of artists (mostly contemporary) and a category Subject Matter which has sub categories such as Animals, Religious, Water etc.

• Artcyclopedia is "the guide to great art on the Internet"
  A very extensive site with links to information and images for 8,229 artists (May 2006)featured in arts museum collections around the world. This useful site only "references sites on the World Wide Web where artists' works can be viewed online", so if the artist you want is listed, you can be sure that information and images will be available to view online. Most of the artists in the database specialise in painting & sculpture, but some other art forms, e.g. photography, installation art, decorative arts etc., are covered too.

  It is possible to search by Artist's Name, by the Title of a particular Artwork, by Museum Name or Location, or to browse by artist name, medium, subject,nationality or gender. It is also possible to browse by Art Movement, e.g. Abstract Expressionism, Pre-Raphaelites, High Renaissance etc. New to the site is ArtConversation, Online Forum, currently (May 2006) in Beta Testing.

  Other resources on this site include Art News from Around the World, Glossaries, 'Artist Values' and more. There is also an extensive set of general art related Links.

• Christopher L. C. E. Witcombe's Art History Resources on the Web is a wonderful and very extensive resource whose remit is rather wider than that of this guide. It includes links to various art movements and individual artists as well as listings by period (from prehistoric to contemporary) and, in a more limited way, by region

  Also from Voice of the Shuttle, Art History links, Europe are listed by period: Prehistoric, Classical, Medieval, then by century. These are subdivided, e.g. by region, type such as Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic etc. From the 15th century onwards subdivisions are generally by country/nationality and then by individual artist.
