The Context
Burton Manor is one of the United Kingdom's leading short term residential colleges for adults and is owned and governed by Liverpool City Council.
Our aim is to encourage and enable you to develop your full potential by providing high quality courses within a stimulating learning environment.
We offer an eclectic range of general interest, personal development and social learning opportunities for both individuals and community groups. We are a centre for management and professional development and a valuable training venue for many public and private sector organisations.
History
Burton Manor's first courses were in 1948. In 1944 the Education Act had made provision for a number of Education Authorities, if they so wished, to come together to jointly fund a Residential College of Adult Education in their area. Burton Manor was an example of this with a Joint Management Committee composed of members from Liverpool, Cheshire, Lancashire, Bootle and Wallasey. However , eventually ,Liverpool City evolved as the sole champion of the college. There is now substantial goodwill from Liverpool City and active, positive support from our Governing Body.
Importance to Liverpool
We are the chosen venue for many Liverpool groups and organisations who make use of the facilities here and tell us how proud they are that their asset is still being supported. Still a rural retreat, the college is also used by organisations from across the North West and learners come from across the country for our weekend residential courses.
The city's role in governance of the college is acknowledged, and visitors to the area are actively encouraged to visit the city. Reflecting the importance of Liverpool to us, each year we continue the tradition of offering residential courses, themed to focus on aspects of the culture and history of our city and designed to provide people from all over the country a real chance to discover its wonderful assets. In our sixtieth year it was particularly appropriate that the heritage and history of the college added value to the Liverpool 2008 Capital of Culture..
The Future
Our vision is that Burton Manor will be a thriving and welcoming learning environment making a positive commercial contribution to the local economy. We will be recognised nationally as innovative and forward thinking. Burton Manor will continue to be a cherished resource for many people from Liverpool, the North West and beyond.
Liverpool Centred Residential Courses
Burton Manor runs courses each year to bring people closer to the (truly) wonderful City of Liverpool, with its architectural, maritime and arts heritage. These involve multiple field trips to the City (just over half an hour away), combined with lectures on relevant themes from local experts. We can cater for groups of up to 40 people, putting together a package of stimulating visits and experiences to suit. CLICK HERE FOR AN EXAMPLE PROGRAMME that can be adapted for any group.
